While browsing the Billboard top 5 songs this week, I realized something. There's only one song this week that actually stands out to me. We still have Meghan Trainor at the top, then some
Basically, all stuff that I've heard before.
Tove Lo - Habits, sits at #3 up from #5 last week.
I'm sure you've heard this song but I haven't until today and here's why:
WHAT KIND OF A NAME IS TOVE LO!?
I know, after some ninja Google research your going tell me where her name came from and its going to be really deep and meaningful. Don't. Care. It's just not a name that immediately appealed to me.
When it came up on my radio display I would always assume it was some young punk rapper singing about how he loves to... well, Stay High. Can you blame me?
Well I finally got over myself and actually listened to the song.
FIRST THOUGHTS
At first I was a little put off... throw up, sex clubs, Twinkies. Not a turn on for me. But I can respect this kind of blunt lyricism. The fact is, the party life isn't all Katy Perry bubbles and Ke$ha glitter. There's usually a lot more of the stuff Tove is singing about.
But after this punch-to-the-face start, things take a generic turn...
The chorus isn't particularly bad. The "I'm trying to forget you but can't" trope is obvious but the lyrics are not super derivative. My real issue is with the instrumentation and Tove's voice. The music is plain and overproduced, they could have really put some more effort in. Instead we get "pop background #7", which doesn't seem to fit the sort of counter-pop and critical nature of the song's lyrics. Tove's voice also contributes to making this song not so special. Her voice isn't bad, Its just not cut out for something like this. She has a singer-songwriter kind of voice that would sound good behind an acoustic guitar but instead, she's singing Sia songs.
THE VERDICT:
Habits teeters on the edge of cool and clever but doesn't quite make it. Its still a little too generic and goes down a little too easy.
6/10
